I am one of those people who should get a kindle but hasn’t because I like the look, feel and honestly smell of an actual book. So, with that being said, I usually end up taking a few books with me when I travel. I think I started with four, one of which was small and was almost finished. I had planned to be finished two by the time I got to the end of my trip in Vietnam and was going to ship them home.
Because of my plan I decided to stop by this bookstore in Hanoi called The Bookworm. I had read online that it carried a lot of books specifically related to Vietnamese history, culture and food so I really wanted to check it out.
It is quite hidden that it is so easy to pass, there is a sign at the entrance to a tiny walkway that takes you to the back of a building offering cooking classes. There is a courtyard between the bookstore and the front building.
This bookstore is amazing! One of my favourites, and I have been to a lot. There were so many books I wanted to buy but I knew I had to choose just one and so I went with Last Night I Dreamed of Peace: The Diary of Dang Thuy Tram which is a translated diary of a woman who was a doctor during the American-Vietnam war and served at different field hospitals. She writes her account of the war and what she and her fellow doctors went through during this time. It offers a unique perspective of the war through the eyes of a civilian.
If you are in Hanoi and looking to get some books that will teach you a little more about Vietnam , than I highly recommend this bookstore.
