An Island Vacation on Cheung Chau | Explore Hong Kong

While living in Korea, our hagwon offered two vacations periods. One in the winter and one in the summer. For our summer vacation my friend and I were trying to decide where we would go for 5 days. At first we were looking into the Philippines, but the flights were too expensive and we were a little nervous about travelling there with the current political climate. We found a round trip to Hong Kong for only $150 and decided to visit our favourite place once again.

This time we thought that it would be nice to spend sometime on an island and get in some beach time and relaxation as it had been quite the busy semester at our school. We also wanted to visit Macau, another Chinese territory just a short ferry ride away. We did some research and found a lovely island called Cheung Chau promising all that we wanted for our vacation.

We got off our flight and took the metro to the city centre, got in a taxi and headed to the Pier. We got on the ferry at Central Pier #5, and headed to the island for a couple of nights. Our airbnb was so lovely and right on the beach. We were able to fall asleep to the ocean waves and wake up to see a beautiful sunrise over the ocean.

Wandering through this island you will see the cutest streets with colourful buildings and little restaurants all along the boardwalk.

We also decided to hike to the other side of the island (about 30 minutes) in the sweltering heat to find this coral beach called Tung Wan Tsai. It was beautiful! We had the beach basically all to ourselves and spent the better part of the afternoon in and out of the warm ocean water, sunbathing on the beach, and finding pretty shells. It was one of my favourite days and it was so nice to just relax, read a book and soak up the sun.

A friend of mine recently took a trip to Hong Kong and went to this same island and beach. Unfortunately a typhoon had just gone through the area and much to her surprise and mine when I found out, the beautiful beach was covered in garbage that had been washed up on shore from the storms. It saddened me that this beautiful place was now covered with pollution and that all this garbage was in the ocean! Harming the wildlife that lives there. It’s a PSA for all of us to better preserve our planet so that those who come after us can also enjoy its beauty.

Happy Travels!
